Concrete and screed floors explained

Learn to identify concrete and screed floors, spot what is hidden inside them, and check safely before you drill.

CS-01Understand what a concrete floor actually isA concrete floor is a solid slab, either poured straight onto compacted ground (a 'solid floor') or cast onto beams with a void underneath (a 'suspended concrete floor'). Most ground-floor rooms in modern UK homes sit on a solid slab. Beginners often assume all downstairs floors are the same, but suspended concrete floors behave differently and can have services running through the void below.
CS-02Understand what screed is and why it is thereScreed is a thin layer, usually 50-75mm, laid on top of the structural concrete to give a smooth, level surface ready for tiles or flooring. It is often used to bury underfloor heating pipes or electric heating mats, so a floor can look like plain concrete but actually have services just below the surface. The mistake beginners make is treating screed and structural concrete as the same material when checking for hazards.
CS-03Tell a solid floor from a suspended timber floorTap the floor firmly with a knuckle or the handle of a screwdriver in several spots. A solid concrete floor sounds dull and dead, with almost no give underfoot. A timber floor sounds hollow and springs slightly when you walk on it. Skirting boards nailed with visible fixings every so often into a hard surface behind them are another clue you are dealing with concrete or masonry.
CS-04Spot the difference between bare concrete and screedBare concrete is usually grey, rough, and may have visible stone aggregate in it. Screed is smoother, often a lighter sandy grey, and feels more uniform underfoot. If you can see an edge, such as where a floor meets a doorway or has been cut for a pipe, look for a thin, distinct top layer sitting on a thicker, coarser base. That thin top layer is the screed.
CS-05Know what could be hidden inside before you touch itConcrete and screed floors can conceal underfloor heating pipes, electric heating mats, structural mesh, and sometimes electrical cables or water pipes routed to sockets, radiators or outside taps. There is no visible 'safe zone' rule for floors the way there is for walls, so anywhere on the floor should be treated as a possible location for something buried. This is the single biggest thing beginners get wrong: they assume floors are just solid and empty.
CS-06Check properly before you drill or cut into itUse a cable and pipe detector set to floor or 'deep' mode and sweep the area slowly in a grid pattern, marking anything it flags with masking tape. But treat the detector as a warning aid, not a guarantee: it can miss cables that are deep, buried in metal-backed board, run in metal conduit, or laid outside where you would expect. Older or amateur work often ignores any layout logic altogether. If there is any doubt at all, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit (the fuse box) before drilling, and turn the water off at the stopcock before cutting into anything that could hold a pipe. Expect something to be there and prove otherwise, rather than assuming the detector's silence means it is safe.

CS-07Confirm you have understood the floor correctlyYou have got this right if you can confidently say whether a floor is solid concrete, suspended concrete, or screed over concrete, and explain how you worked that out. You should also be able to point to where you would and would not expect pipes or cables to run, and know that a detector check is a precaution, not proof of safety. If you cannot explain your reasoning out loud in one or two sentences, go back over the earlier checks before doing any real work on the floor.
