Fixing into metal studs

Learn to identify metal stud walls and fix into them safely using the right screws.

MS-01Recognise a metal stud wallMetal stud walls are internal partitions built from thin steel channels called studs, covered in plasterboard (the flat grey sheets used for walls and ceilings). Knock on the wall - it sounds hollow and slightly tinny, different from the dull thud of a masonry wall. Studs usually sit every 300mm, 400mm or 600mm apart, with a metal track running along the floor and ceiling. Beginners often mistake a hollow masonry wall (like an old lath and plaster ceiling) for a stud wall - check for a track line at floor level if you're unsure.
MS-02Find the stud with a detectorA stud detector (a small handheld tool, around £10-£20) senses density or magnetic changes behind plasterboard. Slide it slowly across the wall in a horizontal line - it beeps or lights up at the edge of the stud, then again a little further on at the other edge. Mark both edges in pencil, then mark the centre between them - that's the thickest, safest part of the steel to screw into. A cheap trick: metal studs are magnetic, so a fridge magnet on a string will often pull towards the line of screws already fixing the plasterboard to the stud.
MS-03Pick the right screwOrdinary wood screws and wall plugs (used for masonry) won't grip thin sheet steel - there's nothing for them to bite into, and studs are usually only 0.5mm-2mm thick. Use self-drilling screws, sometimes sold as self-tapping or wafer-head screws, which have a sharp drill-point tip that cuts its own hole and thread as you drive it in. Buy screws labelled specifically for metal stud or steel fixing, not general-purpose wood screws.

MS-04Check for cables and pipes before you drillEven in a metal stud wall, electrical cables and sometimes pipework can run through holes punched in the studs, hidden behind the plasterboard. If there's any doubt, isolate the circuit at the consumer unit (the fuse box) before drilling, and turn off the water at the stopcock before cutting into anything that could carry water. A detector only reduces the risk - it can miss cables that run deep, sit in metal conduit, hide behind metal-backed plasterboard, or simply don't follow the usual safe zones, especially in older or DIY-wired homes. Expect something to be there and prove otherwise, rather than assuming silence from the detector means it's safe.
MS-05Drive the screw homeHold the screw square to the wall and start the drill on a slow speed - going too fast makes the tip skate across the plasterboard before it bites into the steel. Once the point grips, you'll feel it pull itself in and start cutting a thread; keep steady, even pressure and let the screw do the work. Stop as soon as the head sits flush with the plasterboard - overdriving strips the thread out of the thin steel and ruins the fixing.
MS-06Test the fixingOnce the screw is in, give it a firm tug and a side-to-side wobble by hand. A good fixing feels solid, with no give and no rotation. If the screw spins freely or pulls straight out, the thread has stripped in the steel - remove it, move a few millimetres over on the same stud, and start again with a new screw.
MS-07Know when a screw alone isn't enoughA single self-drilling screw into a steel stud is fine for light items like a small picture or a cable clip, but it isn't rated for heavy weight - most manufacturers don't even give a load rating for one screw into thin steel. For anything heavier, such as a shelf, mirror or TV bracket, use a proper hollow-wall fixing like a metal cavity toggle rated for the weight, or fix into two studs with a batten across them. When in doubt, treat the plasterboard and stud as light-duty only.
