Learn what grab adhesive is, how to apply it, and how to tell it has bonded properly.
GA-01Understand what grab adhesive is forGrab adhesive is a thick, strong glue that comes in a cartridge, like sealant. It's used to stick things like skirting, coving, or wall panels without screws or nails, especially on surfaces you can't easily drill into. It grips fast but takes 24 hours or more to reach full strength, so it's not instant like superglue.
GA-02Check the surfaces are suitableGrab adhesive needs a clean, dry, dust-free surface to bond to. Wipe both surfaces with a damp cloth and let them dry fully, then check the cartridge label to make sure it works on your materials (some don't suit painted gloss or very glossy tiles). The beginner mistake is gluing over dust or grease, which stops the bond forming properly.
GA-03Load the cartridge into a sealant gunA sealant gun (sometimes called a caulking gun) holds the cartridge and pushes the adhesive out when you squeeze the trigger. Snip the nozzle tip at an angle with a knife or scissors, then puncture the seal inside using a long thin object like a screwdriver or the tool built into some guns. Load the cartridge in, point it away from you, and squeeze gently until adhesive appears.
GA-04Apply the adhesive in blobs or linesSqueeze out blobs about the size of a 10 pence coin, spaced roughly 100mm to 150mm apart, or a wavy continuous line if you're covering a long thin piece like skirting. Don't cover the whole surface solidly, as this stops air escaping and can make the piece slide around instead of gripping. Too much adhesive is the classic beginner mistake, it oozes out the sides and makes a mess.
GA-05Press the piece into place and holdPush the item firmly onto the surface, then pull it away slightly and press it back again. This second press, called 'bumping', helps the adhesive grip better by working it into the surface texture. Hold or prop the piece in position for at least a minute, and check your instructions as some products need longer.
GA-06Support the piece until it setsEven though grab adhesive holds straight away, it isn't at full strength yet. Use masking tape, a prop, or something heavy to hold the piece in place for the time stated on the cartridge, often several hours. Don't lean on it, hang anything from it, or knock it during this time, that's when most bonds fail.
GA-07Check the bond has workedAfter the full curing time on the label (usually 24 hours), gently try to lift a corner or push the piece sideways. It should feel solid with no movement or flex. If it moves, or you can see gaps where the adhesive didn't touch both surfaces, remove the piece, clean off old adhesive, and start again rather than adding more glue on top.
