How to find a stud

Learn to reliably find a timber or metal stud behind plasterboard before you drill or fix anything to a wall.

FS-01Understand what you're looking forMost internal walls in UK homes are either solid (brick or blockwork under plaster) or a 'stud wall' - a timber or metal frame with plasterboard screwed to each side. The studs are the vertical posts inside that frame, usually spaced 400mm or 600mm apart, centre to centre. Between the studs is just plasterboard and air, which won't hold a screw properly - you need to find the solid timber or metal to fix into anything heavy.
FS-02Tap and listen along the wallMake a fist and gently knock along the wall at the same height, moving a hand's width at a time. Over open space it sounds hollow and a bit hollow-drum-like; over a stud it sounds duller and firmer. The mistake beginners make is expecting a huge difference - it's often subtle, so tap slowly and compare, don't just knock once and guess.
FS-03Sweep the wall with a stud detectorA stud detector is a small handheld tool that senses changes in density (or a magnetic type that senses screws/nails in the frame). Hold it flat against the wall and slide it slowly and steadily sideways - most give a light, sound or beep when they sense the edge of a stud. Test it first over a spot you're sure is hollow so you know what 'no stud' feels and sounds like before you trust a positive reading.
FS-04Find both edges and mark the centreSweep from the left until the detector signals, mark that point lightly in pencil, then sweep from the right until it signals again. The gap between your two marks is roughly the width of the stud, usually 35-45mm. Mark the middle of that gap - that's your safest fixing point, not the very edge where you might miss the timber.
FS-05Check by drilling a small pilot holeBefore drilling or fixing into any wall, stop and think about what could be behind it - cables and pipes aren't always where you'd expect, especially in older houses or if a previous owner did their own wiring. If there's any doubt at all, isolate the electrics at the consumer unit (the fuse box) before drilling, and turn the water off at the stopcock before cutting into anything that could carry water. A stud or cable detector lowers the risk but doesn't remove it - it can miss cables that run deep, sit in metal conduit, are hidden behind metal-backed plasterboard, or simply weren't installed in the usual safe zones. Treat every wall as if something is hidden until you've proved otherwise, then drill a small pilot hole (2-3mm) at your marked centre point, going in slowly.
FS-06Know when you've found itIf you're on the stud, the drill will feel solid resistance all the way through and the dust coming out will be pale, powdery wood (or fine metal shavings for a metal stud). If the drill suddenly plunges through with no resistance and no dust, you're in the gap between studs - stop, fill the hole later, and try again 15-20mm to one side.

FS-07Avoid the common beginner mistakeDon't rely on a single reading from a detector or a single tap - always cross-check with at least two methods (tap, detector, and a pilot hole) before trusting a spot enough to hang something heavy. Studs are usually evenly spaced once you find the first one, so measuring 400mm or 600mm along from a confirmed stud is a good way to predict the next one, but always confirm each new spot the same way rather than just measuring and drilling blind.
