TM-01Understand the layout of the tapeA tape measure shows centimetres (the bigger numbers, usually every 10mm) and millimetres (the small unmarked lines between them). In the UK, always work in millimetres (mm) for DIY - it avoids confusion between cm and inches. Look at your tape now and find the numbers 10, 20, 30 - those are centimetres, and count the tiny lines between two numbers - there should be 10, each one 1mm.
