How to tell what your wall is made of

Learn simple checks to work out if a wall is plasterboard, brick, or blockwork before you drill or fix anything.

WT-01Tap the wall and listenMake a fist and knock gently on the wall in several spots, moving across a wide area. A hollow, boxy sound means you're likely on plasterboard over an empty cavity (a stud wall or dot-and-dab lining). A dull, solid thud means brick or blockwork behind. The mistake beginners make is tapping only once and deciding - tap in at least five spots, because studs and noggins (horizontal timber supports) sound solid even on a hollow stud wall.
WT-02Check the wall's edges and thicknessLook at a door frame, window reveal, or the corner where the wall meets another wall. Measure how thick the wall is. Anything around 200mm or thicker is usually solid masonry, often an external or load-bearing wall. Anything around 75-100mm thick is usually a stud partition wall with plasterboard on a timber or metal frame.
WT-03Sweep the wall with a detectorA detector (sometimes called a multi-detector or stud finder) is a small battery-powered tool you slide slowly and steadily across the wall. It senses changes in density and can pick up metal pipework, timber studs, and sometimes live cables. Move it in a grid pattern - side to side and up and down - and watch for lights or beeps changing, which mark the edge of something behind the surface.
WT-04Drill a small test hole to confirmUse a small masonry drill bit, around 3mm, and drill slowly into an inconspicuous spot, stopping the moment you feel the resistance change or you're through the surface layer. Before you drill anywhere: expect a cable or pipe to be there and prove otherwise. A detector lowers the risk but does not remove it - it can miss cables that are buried deep, run in metal conduit, sit behind metal-backed plasterboard, or simply don't follow the usual safe zones, which is common with older or amateur wiring. If there is any doubt at all, isolate the circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and turn the water off at the stopcock before cutting into anything that could carry water.

WT-05Read the dust and the feel of the drillFine white powdery dust and almost no resistance usually means plasterboard. Reddish-orange or grainy dust with steady resistance usually means brick. Pale grey dust with heavy resistance usually means blockwork or concrete. If the drill goes in easily, then suddenly grips hard, then goes easy again, you've likely gone through plasterboard, hit a timber stud, and come out the other side.
WT-06Cross-check before you trust your answerNever rely on just one method. You've got it right when the tap test, the wall thickness, the detector, and the test hole all point the same way. If they disagree - say the wall sounds hollow but the test hole gives brick dust - trust the drilled evidence over the sound, and check another nearby spot to be sure.
