MDF vs plywood vs chipboard

Learn to tell MDF, plywood and chipboard apart and pick the right one for the job.

MD-01Learn what MDF actually isMDF (medium-density fibreboard) is made from wood fibres glued together under heat and pressure. It has no grain, so it's smooth and flat on both faces and on the cut edge. It comes in sheets, usually 2440mm x 1220mm, in thicknesses from about 6mm up to 25mm. The mistake beginners make is treating it like plywood - it's weaker, and it swells and crumbles if it gets wet, unless you buy the moisture-resistant (MR) version.
MD-02Learn what plywood actually isPlywood is made from thin layers (called veneers) of real wood, glued together with the grain of each layer running at right angles to the one below. This cross-layering is what makes it strong and resistant to splitting. Look at a cut edge and you'll see the layered stripes - that's the giveaway. Beginners often assume all plywood is fine for outdoor use; only exterior or marine-grade plywood is, so check the label.
MD-03Learn what chipboard actually isChipboard (also called particleboard) is made from wood chips and flakes bonded together with resin under pressure. It's the cheapest of the three and common in flooring and worktops. It's weak at the edges and along screw holes - drive a screw in too hard near an edge and it will crumble rather than hold. If chipboard is used for flooring in a kitchen or bathroom, it should be the moisture-resistant type (often marked P5), because ordinary chipboard swells badly if it gets damp.
MD-04Tell them apart by the cut edgeThe fastest way to identify a mystery board is to look at a cut edge, not the flat face. MDF looks fine and uniform, almost like compressed sawdust. Plywood shows clear striped layers. Chipboard shows chunky, visible wood flakes or chips, sometimes with gaps. If you're buying offcuts or reusing old board, this five-second check saves guesswork later.
MD-05Cut a test piece and feel the differenceTake a small offcut of each and make one cut with a handsaw or jigsaw. MDF produces very fine, powdery dust and cuts smoothly with almost no resistance. Plywood can splinter along the grain if the blade is blunt or the wrong way round. Chipboard produces coarser dust and can chip out at the edge of the cut. MDF dust is especially fine and contains the resin used to bind it, so always wear a proper dust mask (FFP2 or better, not just a paper one) and cut in a ventilated space or outdoors.

MD-06Match the board to the jobUse MDF for painted furniture, shelving, or anything needing a smooth painted finish - not anywhere damp. Use plywood where strength and screw-holding matter, like shelf brackets, cabinet carcasses, or subfloors. Use chipboard for budget flooring or cheap worktops where it will be covered or laminated, always choosing moisture-resistant P5 chipboard for kitchens, bathrooms, or anywhere near water. Getting this wrong is the single most common mistake - picking standard MDF or chipboard for a wet area, then wondering why it swells and falls apart months later.
MD-07Check you've picked the right boardBefore you buy a full sheet, check the label or ask staff: does it say MR (moisture resistant) or P5 if it's going anywhere near damp or water? Check the thickness matches your plan - thin MDF sags under weight over a span, so 18mm or thicker for shelving. As a final check, try driving a screw into a test offcut about 15mm from the edge - if it holds firm, you've got the right board for a job needing strength; if it crumbles, you need plywood instead.
