Oscillating multi-tool: what it does and when to reach for it

Learn what an oscillating multi-tool does, how to fit blades, and how to cut or sand safely.

OM-01Understand what the tool actually doesAn oscillating multi-tool has a blade or pad that wiggles side to side very fast, rather than spinning like a drill. This tiny fast movement lets it cut, scrape or sand in tight corners where a normal saw can't fit. Beginners often expect it to cut like a saw in one smooth stroke - it doesn't. It nibbles through material, so cuts are slower than you'd think.
OM-02Fit the right blade for the jobWood blades have coarse teeth, metal blades have fine teeth, and a plunge-cut blade is shaped like a small triangle for starting a cut from flat material. Most tools use a lever or tool-free clamp - lift it, slot the blade in over the mounting pin, then push the lever back down. Check the blade is seated flat and doesn't wobble before you switch on. Using a wood blade on metal (or the other way round) will blunt it in seconds and give a rough, dragging cut.

OM-03Hold it and get a feel for the speedGrip the body with your dominant hand near the trigger and rest your other hand further along for control, like holding a big electric toothbrush. Start on the lowest speed setting and let the blade touch the material lightly - don't push. You should feel a light buzzing vibration in your hands, not a violent kick. If the tool jumps or skates sideways, you're pressing too hard or the blade isn't fully seated.
OM-04Make a plunge cut into a wall or floorA plunge cut means starting a cut in the middle of flat material, not from an edge - useful for cutting a socket recess into plasterboard or trimming a pipe boxing. Angle the blade tip against the surface at about 45 degrees, switch on, then slowly lower it flat as it bites in. If there is ANY doubt about what's behind the surface, isolate the circuit at the consumer unit before drilling or cutting, and turn the water off at the stopcock before cutting into anything that could carry water. A cable or pipe detector helps, but it can miss cables buried deep, run in metal conduit, hidden behind metal-backed plasterboard, or wired outside the normal safe zones - older or DIY wiring often ignores those zones completely. Treat the wall as if something is there until you've proven otherwise, not the other way round.
OM-05Switch to sanding or scrapingFit a sanding pad or a flat scraper head the same way you fitted the blade. For sanding, keep the pad flat against the surface and let it glide - tilting it digs a groove into wood or plaster. For scraping (old sealant, tile adhesive, flooring glue), hold the blade almost flat and push forward slowly, letting the vibration do the lifting rather than forcing it under the material.
OM-06Check you've done it rightA good cut looks clean along the line with no splintering or melted plastic edges, and the blade should stay cool to touch after a short cut. If the material looks scorched or the blade is too hot to hold, you were pressing too hard or moving too slowly along the line. On a plunge cut, the depth should match what you intended - most tools have a depth guide or you can wrap tape round the blade to mark it.
OM-07Avoid the mistakes beginners always makeDon't force the tool through material - if it's slow going, the blade is blunt or wrong for the job, not you doing something wrong. Don't cut on full speed straight away; work up from low speed once you feel confident. Always let go of the trigger and wait for the blade to fully stop before putting the tool down, as a still-moving blade can mark surfaces or catch your hand.
