Plasterboard on timber studs explained

Learn to find timber studs behind plasterboard and drill into them safely and correctly.

PS-01Understand what's behind the wallPlasterboard is a flat sheet made of gypsum (a soft, chalky mineral) sandwiched between two layers of paper. It's screwed onto a hidden timber frame called studs - vertical wooden battens, usually spaced 400mm or 600mm apart, measured centre to centre. Between the studs there's just a hollow gap, sometimes with insulation. Only the timber studs give you a strong fixing; the plasterboard alone will not hold much weight.
PS-02Do a knock test to find the general areaMake a fist and knock gently along the wall in a horizontal line, about knuckle-width apart. A hollow, dull, low sound means you're over empty space between studs. A tighter, higher-pitched, more solid sound means there's timber behind that spot. This is a rough guide, not a precise measurement.
PS-03Confirm with a detectorA stud detector (also sold as a multi-detector) is a handheld electronic tool that senses changes in density, plus metal and sometimes live electrical cables, when you slide it slowly across the wall. Move it steadily from your hollow-sounding area towards your solid-sounding one until it beeps or lights up. Mark that point lightly with a pencil.
PS-04Find the centre, not just the edgeThe beginner mistake is marking the first edge the detector finds and drilling straight into it. Instead, keep sweeping past that point until the signal stops again - that's the other edge of the stud. Mark both edges, then mark the midpoint between them; that's your solid fixing point, usually a stud is around 35-45mm wide.
PS-05Drill a test pilot hole safelyBefore you drill, always expect a cable or pipe could be there and prove otherwise - a detector reduces risk but does not remove it. It can miss cables that run deep, sit in metal conduit, hide behind metal-backed plasterboard, or simply don't follow the usual safe zones, which is common with older or amateur wiring. If there's any doubt at all, isolate the circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and turn off the water at the stopcock before cutting into anything that could carry water. Drill a small pilot hole at your marked centre point, going in slowly and steadily.
PS-06Check you've got it rightIf you're in the stud, the drill will feel firmer and slower going through, and the dust coming out will be light brown wood shavings, not white or grey plaster powder. If you only get plaster dust and the drill suddenly punches through easily, you've missed the stud and hit the hollow gap - move over slightly and try again. A test screw driven into a real stud will feel tight and solid, not loose or spinning freely.
