Stud detector: common mistakes and how to avoid them

Learn to use a stud detector properly so you can find studs, cables and pipes before drilling.

SD-01Know what the tool actually doesA stud detector (also called a wall scanner) is a handheld device that senses changes behind a wall's surface, such as density changes (finding timber studs or joists) or, on multi-mode models, electrical fields (finding live cables) and sometimes metal (finding pipes or nails). Cheap models only do one of these things well, so check what yours claims to detect before you trust it. Read the instructions once, even briefly - models vary in how they beep or light up for a find.
SD-02Calibrate it on a spot you know is clearMost detectors need calibrating before each use: you place them flat on the wall and press a button, and the device 'learns' the wall's normal reading. Do this on a patch of wall you're fairly confident has nothing behind it, away from corners, sockets, switches and light fittings. If you calibrate on top of a hidden cable or pipe, the tool will treat that as 'normal' and miss it later - this is the single most common beginner mistake.
SD-03Scan slowly in a straight lineHold the detector flat against the wall and slide it steadily in one direction, without lifting it off or twisting it - lifting and replacing it resets its reading and gives false results. Move at a slow, even walking-pace-for-your-hand speed; rushing is the second most common mistake and causes missed finds. Watch and listen for the signal to change (a light, a beep, or both) rather than waiting for a dramatic reaction.
SD-04Scan the same spot from multiple directionsRun the detector horizontally, then vertically, then diagonally over the same patch of wall. A single pass in one direction can miss a cable or pipe running parallel to your scan line. Mark each edge of every 'find' lightly in pencil as you go, so you build up a picture rather than relying on memory.
SD-05Look for other clues, not just the detectorCross-check what the detector tells you against what you can see: light switches and sockets usually have a cable running up or down from them, and radiators usually have a pipe running down to the floor. Tap the wall gently with a knuckle - a dull, solid sound often means a stud or joist behind, while a hollow sound means empty cavity. No single method is reliable on its own; using two or three together is how you actually get a trustworthy picture.
SD-06Before you drill, assume something is thereA detector reduces risk, it does not remove it. It can miss cables that run deep, cables in metal conduit, anything behind metal-backed plasterboard, and anything routed outside the 'safe zones' installers are supposed to use - older or amateur wiring often ignores those zones completely. If there is any doubt at all, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit (the fuse box) before drilling, and turn the water off at the stopcock before cutting into anything that could carry a pipe. Treat every wall as if something is behind it until you've proven otherwise, not the other way round.
SD-07Check you've read it correctlyYou've done it right if your pencil marks from different scan directions line up into a sensible pattern - for example, a vertical stud roughly every 400mm or 600mm, or a cable line running straight up from a socket. If your marks are scattered and don't agree with each other, or don't match what you'd expect to see, stop and rescan rather than guessing. When genuinely unsure, drill a small pilot hole in a low-risk spot first and feel/look for what's there before committing to a bigger fixing.
