Wall plugs (Rawlplugs) and how to choose one

Learn to pick, drill for, and fit the right wall plug so a screw actually holds in a wall.

WP-01Understand why you need a wall plug at allA screw driven straight into a wall (other than solid wood) has almost nothing to grip. A wall plug is a small plastic (sometimes metal) sleeve that goes into a drilled hole first. When you drive the screw into the plug, the plug expands and jams tight against the sides of the hole, giving the screw something solid to bite into. Beginners often skip this for 'just a small screw' and wonder why it pulls straight back out under load.
WP-02Work out what kind of wall you're dealing withKnock on the wall with a knuckle. A dull, solid thud means masonry (brick, block, or concrete) behind plaster. A hollow, drum-like sound means a stud wall or plasterboard on a timber or metal frame, often with an air gap behind. This matters because masonry needs a hole drilled into solid material, while plasterboard needs a special plug designed to grip a thin sheet with nothing solid behind it. Guessing wrong is the single biggest reason plugs fail.
WP-03Match the plug and drill bit to the screw and the loadWall plugs come in sizes such as 5mm, 6mm, 7mm, 8mm and 10mm, referring to the diameter of the hole they need. Check the packet: it tells you which drill bit size to use and which screw gauge (thickness) fits that plug. For anything heavier than a small picture, such as a shelf bracket or curtain pole, go up a size rather than down, since an undersized plug will spin loosely in the hole and never grip.

WP-04Drill the hole to the right depth, safelyMark your spot, set the drill to the masonry setting (a hammer action) for brick or block, or a normal setting for plasterboard, and drill slightly deeper than the plug's length so it can sit flush. Before you drill anywhere in an existing wall, expect a cable or pipe could be there and prove otherwise: use a cable and pipe detector to scan the spot, but understand a detector reduces risk, it does not remove it. Detectors can miss cables that are buried deep, run in metal conduit, sit behind metal-backed plasterboard, or lie outside the usual safe zones, and older or amateur wiring often ignores those safe zones completely. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and turn off the water at the stopcock before cutting into anything that could carry water.
WP-05Clear the dust and push the plug in fullyBlow or vacuum the dust out of the hole, since a dust-packed hole stops the plug seating properly. Push the plug in with your fingers until it's flush with the wall surface, tapping gently with a hammer if it's stiff. It should go in snugly, not loosely; if it falls in with no resistance, the hole is too big and you need a larger plug.
WP-06Drive the screw in slowly and feel what happensStart the screw by hand or on a slow drill setting. You should feel resistance building steadily as the plug expands outward against the hole; that resistance is the plug doing its job. Stop once the screw head is snug against the wall or fitting; overtightening can strip the plug and spin it uselessly in the hole.
WP-07Check you've actually got a solid fixingGrip the screw or fitting and give it a firm wiggle and a gentle pull. It should feel rock solid with no movement or crumbling around the hole. If it moves, spins, or pulls dust out from around the edges, the plug hasn't gripped; back the screw out, try a slightly larger plug in the same hole or drill a fresh hole nearby, rather than trusting a fixing that already feels loose.
