Workbench and clamps: how to hold it safely

Learn to clamp work securely to a bench so both hands stay free and the work cannot slip.

WC-01Understand why you clampA clamp is a tool that grips your work and holds it still against the bench, so you don't need a hand to hold it. This frees both hands for the job and stops the work sliding or spinning while you cut, drill or sand it. The mistake beginners make is holding work down with one hand while using a tool with the other - if the tool slips, that hand is in the path of it.
WC-02Learn the two common clamp typesA G-clamp is shaped like the letter G, with a screw you turn by hand to close the gap and grip. A quick-action clamp has a trigger handle you squeeze to close it fast, and a release button to let go instantly. G-clamps grip harder and are good for heavy work; quick-action clamps are faster for light jobs. Start with whichever you own - both do the same basic job.
WC-03Protect the work with scrap woodPut a small offcut of scrap wood between each clamp jaw and your actual workpiece before you tighten. This spreads the pressure and stops the metal jaw denting or marking the wood underneath. The beginner mistake is clamping metal straight onto a finished surface - it leaves a permanent crush mark you can't sand out.
WC-04Position the work before you clampLay the work flat on the bench. If you're about to cut it, let the cut line overhang the edge of the bench slightly, so the saw or drill bit has clear space underneath and doesn't hit the bench. Clamp close to where you're working, but leave enough wood either side of the clamp so it doesn't get in the way of your tool.
WC-05Tighten to the right amountTurn the screw or squeeze the trigger until the clamp is snug against the work, then add a bit more so it feels solid - it should stop just short of denting the scrap wood protector. Too loose and the work can twist under a cutting tool; too tight and you can crush or split thin timber. You'll learn the right feel with practice - firm resistance, not brute force.
WC-06Test it's secure before you start workBefore you pick up any tool, grab the clamped work with both hands and push, pull and twist it firmly. It should not move, rock or slide at all - if it shifts even slightly, tighten the clamp more or reposition it. This is your proof it's done right; never trust a clamp by eye alone, always test it by hand.
WC-07Avoid clamping only at one endIf you clamp long or wide work at just one point, the far end can still flex or vibrate while you cut or drill, even though the clamped end feels rock solid. For longer pieces, use two clamps spaced apart, or clamp as close as possible to where the tool is actually working. Keep your fingers and hands away from the clamp screw and from the tool's cutting path at all times.
